INSULATED (DGU) GLASS
DGUs are glass units invented for a very specific purpose: insulation. A DGU is made with two sheets of glass separated some width apart by vacuum or a filler gas. A DGU unit is a superior energy-saver. When the weather gets hot outside, the outer sheet of glass gets heated up. Since there is a layer of separation between the outer and inner sheets of glass, the heat absorbed by the outer glass does not get transferred inside the house. Conversely, when the weather is cold outside, the interior glass pane does not let the warmth of the house escape out. This results in reduction in heating/cooling bills.
When the space between two glasses is filled with an inhibiting gas such as argon, energy savings can be increased further. DGUs are also very popular in structures that are located in a noisy neighbourhood but require sound insulation on the inside – such as museums and theatres. The soundwaves hitting the outer sheet of glass are stopped by the gas pocket between the two sheets of glass, and are prevented from travelling inside the building. So even if it is noisy outside, the interior of a museum will still remain peaceful as ever!
DGUs can last for as long as 25 years if there is no vandalism. They are a great one-time investment that let you cash in on energy bill savings. You can opt for this installation if you live in a noisy place.
